Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.
On this Blog you will find up-to-date records and pictures.
I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.
Please also check out the links in the sidebar to the right for other people's Blogs and informative Websites.
Thanks for looking and happy Mothing!

Cherry-bark Moth (Enarmonia formosana)

A really pretty Micro, a first for me, and it has a little story behind its capture....

I was at work and opened the car door to get in, a small brightly coloured Moth was flying about, I thought drat! I haven't got any pots on me as it settled on the window, the species instantly recognisable despite never seeing one in person before.
Strangely I went to cup it in my hands to get a better look, whoops it flew about and would you believe landed in-between the car door and the car body, I shut the door gently encapsulating the Moth and drove home.
40 minutes later I opened the car door tentatively and there it was still sitting pretty, so a mad dash for a pot at home and the result, a new record and an obliging photo.

Sometimes luck does shine down on you, note to self.... pack a few pots in the glovebox for next time!

  2. One I'd really like to see! I learnt a long while ago the value of always having pots handy - aside from having them readily accessible at home, I have plenty in the car and a few in my desk drawer just in case. Best moths potted whilst at work so far include a Vestal and the first Antigastra catalaunalis for VC55!
