Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.

I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.

Catch Report - Braughing 08/07/12

Well the weather has been so dire for aslong as I can remember, so little opportunity to trap and also being busy with family etc, I am slowing down abit with my trapping efforts ahead of moving into or new house at the end of this month, so come the end of Juily, there will be no more lengthy lists! unless I have a field trip out. 
It has been the worst recording year (for numbers) since I began in 2006 (which ironically was a bumper year!) but all is not bad as it still seems good enough to produce some of the rarest moths in the County!
Last night was no different and feature a lovely Ruddy Carpet, albeit indoors fluttering about the lobby light! I thought my eyes were deceiving me and instantly put it as a Flame Carpet (another one that is usually common but have not seen yet this year)
Other moths new for the year were just Lilac Beauty, Water Veneer, Ancylis achatana and Meal Moth which given the time of year and the overcast and dry conditions last night, is pretty poor.
