Welcome

Hello and welcome to my moth Blog. I now reside in a small village in East Cambridgeshire called Fordham. My Blog's aim is to promote and encourage others to participate in the wonderful hobby that is Moth-trapping.
Moth records are vital for building a picture of our ecosystem around us, as they really are the bottom of the food chain. They are an excellent early indicator of how healthy a habitat is. I openly encourage people to share their findings via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
So why do we do it? well for some people it is to get an insight into the world of Moths, for others it is to build a list of species much like 'Twitching' in the Bird world. The reason I do it....you just never know what you might find when you open up that trap! I hope to show what different species inhabit Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties.

I run a trap regularly in my garden and also enjoy doing field trips to various localities over several different counties.

GMS a day late

I decided not to do my Garden Moth Scheme contribution on the Friday as again I wasn't very well.
Feeling better yesterday I decided to run the trap again and get up at stupid 'o'clock to beat the local Blue Tits to the moths.
The day had been fairly average in temperature at around 16 degrees but the night time temperature was set to stay about 10 degrees although with the imminent threat of rain by dawn......would I beat it getting up at 5am?
Nope, unfortunately the outer egg trays got a bit of a soaking but there were some moths, and some new ones for the year again!
Starting with the small stuff I trapped a smart Celypha striana and a less smart Nemapogon cloacella which was new for the garden so that was pleasing indeed.


On the Macro moth front finally I got my first Hawk-moth of the year, my latest ever appearace of a Hawk-moth by nearly 3 weeks! A Poplar Hawk-moth made it in the trap to shelter from the rain. 
Usually by now I would have seen Lime Hawk-moth as well.

So close to the first milestone 100 species for the year at 99 now...
